When getting a new sound system in your 1st gen Camaro, do you have them cut holes to put in speakers in the front doors or under dash ? I am not sure i want them to do this because the door panels cost so much. Where did you guys get the speakers installed ? If anyone has pictures of how their speakers in front are set up please post. I'd really appreciate it. Also the speaker in the front up top below the windshield glass is blown, is this easy to replace ? Do i have to take the whole front heater controlls of to install it ? Thanks

The cheapest and easiest is to buy modified kick panels. They run from basic (small magnet and driver speakers) to deeper for better speakers.Or you can make your own enclosures over the kick panels like I did. You can run a search and see what people have done. http://www.casmfg.com/Camaro_Kicks.htm

I got a set of kickpanels from Screaming performance with the housings, not cheap at $325 but.....if you are wanting a set to modify let me know as I am going to pull the brand new OER set out of my 68 to install these. I installed them a month ago and the car can't be driven yet so they ar perfect and fit really well.

FYI, I'm not into "custom" interiors. To me, the more OEM-looking, the better.
I bought aftermarket kick panels and installed top-line bose speakers in them along with two sweet rear deck speakers. From this experience, I can say there is no point in mounting speakers in the kick panels. At 50/50 bias, you cant even hear them and changing the bias to 80/20, in my opinion, defeats the purpose. My next go-round with speakers will be this winter. I bought an aftermarket dual front speaker that handles 160 watts. I will run both left and right wires to the front speakers (yeah, no stereo in the front) and power to the two speakers mounted in the rear deck. Based on 60's cars I've owned before, this will sound w-a-y better than the current rear deck/kick panel system I currently have. IMO door mounted speakers are not good. They ruin the door panels, they sounds tinny, and they are exposed to too much moisture. |

I will be putting in my new retro sound radio soon. For my front speakers I am considering a dual voice coil speaker that mounts under the dash in place of the stock dash speaker. The dual voice coil speaker is a 140 Watt speaker that claims to offer 70% more cone and dual tweeters. Both front tuner channels connect to it. I ordered the kick panels with built in speakers but they were so cheep looking I sent them back. I also don't want to cut up my door panels so I’m thinking this under dash speaker with a couple nice 6x9 in the back will be a good start. Here is the link to the dash speaker I am talking about.

Matt, I put in some 4 inch speakers like these
http://www.electrawarehouse.com/prod...solute+NEO-402 and used the "old" single radio speaker. I cut up the speaker and made a mounting bracket out of aluminum to mount the speakers to the old dash speaker. then I covered it with upholstery cloth (the type thats on the bottom of your sofa) and mounted it with the original bracket assembly. Cant tell you how it sounds....as I have TONS of stuff to do before I finish the radio....but I will eventually mount 6x9's in the rear. I am also debating putting a 5 inch sub in between the 6x9's....but thats after more body work...

Take out the glove box liner.
you should then be able to reach up there to get to the speaker. If you have A/C - it will be more interesting. speakers.... I just took a pair of 3X10's and "zip tied" them under the dash. one is behind the glove box, the other is along side of the steering column. The sound is OK, and I did not have to change or cut anything. can't see them unless you lay on the floor and look up there.

I went ahead and ordered that speaker today. Will be installing it over Thanksgiving. Counting on the glove box liner trick to work for access.

I was able to replace my front dash speakers correctly by removing the ash tray assembly and the inner glove box. It was not easy or comfortable because your head will be under the dash and your feet over the back of the front passengers seat. I used a double Pioneer replacement. Fit perfect.

Ha...looks like http://www.classicindustries.com bit the dust again, as none of their pictures on this thread are showing up via the links. Just tired going to their site and got the big NO.
