Just to satisfy my own curiosity (it should be noted I teach a medical/dental ethics class) is this the original purchaser of the car from your friend? If it is, was your friend happy with what he originally sold the car for?

I want to be clear, I would pay for the protecto plate my self, this is a great case of "situational ethics".

I do not know; kind of doubt it since it was sold in the early '80s. He probably sold it for $2500 or so, not bad for a no radio/M-22 4.10 L78 with factory ducted hood. Not running but most of the CE engine went with it along with an NOS metal dash.

OK, then my 2 cents is even spending $500.00 the owner is still further ahead in todays dollars than what he paid your friend in the early 80's. He should be happy you contact him.

I think I would have asked what he would be comfortible offering. You might be surprized on what means what to certian people. I think about "what if it was me in the other guys place". In your heart you will know what is right.

This thread turns me off a little to all you guys looking for money. I have a 68 rs ss convert that I would love to have pop for. If the original owner had it, I would think he would just give it to me. What good is it doing you? Be a good person and give it to him. Think of how siked you would be if someone did that for you. If the owner was selling the car for big bucks maybe I would feel different. If he is just a camaro guy like all of us, give it to him. Everyone is too money hungry!

William, I offered the original owner $1000.00 for any proof on my non-doc'd COPO over 10 years ago. I'd call, write letters, send SASA's and all he'd do was avoid me. I'd probably give him more now or moon him depending on how I was feeling that day.

"All you guys looking for money" is a major reason why I and many others no longer have a 1st Gen Camaro-priced out of the hobby. Like it or not Camaros and all 60-70s musclecars are big business. I attend auctions, shows, watch several web sites and believe I know the market fairly well. Original factory documentation is nice to have for non-HP cars; it is of paramount importance for special high-performance cars that are regularly being counterfeited. In addition to proving the cars' L78 build configuration it has the original owners name and the selling dealer. I can guarantee you this is the only way the present owner of the car will ever learn this information. There are plenty of musclecar owners that would pay thousands to acquire this info. I know of a few that have. I hear the Motion guy gets $1,500 up front just to look up a VIN. Having the protect-o-plate will attract stronger buyers, make the car easier to sell and it will sell for a higher price regardless of present condition.

I am not about to give this away-it is not mine. It is my responsibility to understand its' value. If the owner is smart he will gladly pay the modest price. He should consider it a no-brainer investment.

Im just the opposite. I have a 69 rs/ss convert. and would gladly pay the original owner $1500.00 for the original papers/protecto plate. Possibly even more.

Maybe your right @ 500..... If he was an honest person he would give it too him, I can't understand the value to anyone other than the owner of that car. It's too bad we all can't be in it for the love of the car, and want to help each other out! Before today I thought thats why we were all on this site. now I would feel different if the current owner was looking to capitalize on this car. I am assuming the owner is just a guy like me. my bad if im wrong.

To me your statement makes absolutely no sense... To make a judgment call on whether or not a person is "honest" or not based on if he would want a fee for documentation on a car is ludicrous .

There are people that collect all kinds of items as a hobby .
Tell the guy who caught Barry Bonds home run ball that broke Babe Ruth's record , " hey , that is not your ball .... it is Barry Bonds ball .... you should give it to him "

So are you gonna say that when/if the owner sells the car that he bought from William's friend for 2,500.00, as a now proven L78 car, for say $60,000.00, that is he is an "honest" person he will give William's friend the $57,500.00 difference?

You have to realize that this will turn that car into a desired gold mine. I *think* you are just looking at this as a hobbiest that loves his car and never plans on selling it. That's cool. But you also have to understand the other side as well. These cars are now big money and that William's price is nothing compaied with the value he is "giving" this car.

Just my .02,

Rich

I wouldn't blink at paying $500 for the original POP to a car ... documentation is king in my book.

i have a friend who payed $4,000 to get docs to his L89 Camaro! However if the owner tells you to go pee up a rope then what you have is a useless piece of tin that should be with the car anyway. Nothing wrtong with making money just make it a win win for everyone involved!
